Constant Changes in Social Media Require Adaptive Digital Marketing
What’s the big deal with social media?
In today’s society, social media plays an important role in several aspects of everyday life. A tremendous amount of socialization has migrated from in-person meetings to online chats. Breaking news is often first seen spreading across social media at the speed of light. Friendships are created based on similar interests, liking the same pages, and following the same accounts. Even employers have joined the game by advertising open positions and screening applicants via social media. This shift in the usage of social media has also caused an inevitable need to re-evaluate digital marketing.
“Half of the world’s population is on some form of social media.”
What are some of the recent changes in social media?
Part of the struggle with the social media society is the ever-changing popularity of various platforms, and the incessant need to keep up with the latest trends. As new generations age, the available social media options grow, and new choices often push outdated ones to the back burner. For instance, according to Alexa, a web-traffic analyzing platform that is owned by Amazon, Reddit has now surpassed Facebook on the list of most-visited websites within the United States.
According to the list formulated by Alexa, the rankings now have Google sitting at the most visits, then YouTube, followed by Reddit, and rounded out by Facebook and Amazon. It might be astounding that the ever-popular Facebook has been dethroned by a social media platform that was nearly unheard of just a few years ago, however, it goes to prove just how quickly the digital world changes.
An even more baffling statistic is just how much time users spend on each site ranked within the top 5 most visited. Reddit might be listed as the 3rd most visited site, however, it outranks all the others on the list when it comes to length of time spent on the site. Reddit clocks in at 15 minutes and 10 seconds of user time, whereas the next closest is Facebook, at 10 minutes and 50 seconds. Each site after drops at least another minute off of that time, decreasing to about 7 minutes of user time.
What does this mean for your business?
This statistic might seem irrelevant to business owners, but it’s actually extremely important to take note of when considering digital marketing. Businesses can only be successful if they’re reaching a receptive audience. When traffic moves away from previously popular platforms, the marketing must follow. An important part of staying relevant as a business is adapting to changes within society. In this particular circumstance, that translates to adjusting digital marketing accordingly.
This is where adaptive digital marketing comes in…
Marketing on platforms such as Reddit requires a different approach than others, such as Facebook. Since Reddit has increased popularity with younger generations, it’s important to understand how to market to this particular audience in order to be successful. As a business owner, it may be difficult to take a step back and evaluate how your company fits into the digital marketing world, and it may be necessary to consult with a third party marketer to get an unbiased point of view on your marketing strategy.
